This olive oil from the 2024 harvest comes from centuries-old olive groves at Herdade do Vale Feitoso, in Monfortinho, and is cultivated using organic farming methods. They are the pure expression of the olive oils from the Beira Interior terroir.
Herdade Vale Feitoso is strategically located equidistant from the Iberian capitals Lisbon and Madrid, but also in a triangular shape with the city of Porto. Being a territory on the Portuguese-Spanish border, and part of the Naturtejo Geopark, located in Beira Interior, it takes advantage of and enhances the best that has already been developed, such as the Bio-Region. There are 7,500 hectares of an agricultural and forestry mosaic in co-association that gives it a wealth of biodiversity that is rare on an Iberian scale. Its forest meets the highest standards in terms of management, being FSC and PEFC certified, a feat achieved as a result of the sustainable management practices, in environmental, social and economic terms, that are implemented. This excellence includes hunting management, where we can find Deer, Fallow Deer, Corsos, Churra do Campo sheep, among others, in complete harmony.
The Feitoso Valley has a thousand-year history, in a region of the Templars, where before them there was a Roman presence with ancient mining havens and the memory of the first orange grove in the country. The carbon footprint of the entire production process was determined, from olive production in the olive grove, harvesting, oil extraction in the mill,
packaging and distribution, being compensated with the planting of thousands of forest trees every year.
In around 200 hectares of Herdade do Vale Feitoso there are so many varieties of olives that they are still undergoing identification studies. This diversity of olive tree varieties – some are no longer even planted in Portugal –, as well as their dispersion across different micro terroirs, are factors responsible for the complexity and differentiation of Herdade de Vale Feitoso.
Here we are not talking about an olive oil with a monovarietal profile. On the contrary, we are faced with complex oils, challenging to taste on the nose and in the mouth, as well as in their ability to connect with food.
At harvest and extraction time, the aim is to obtain oils that reveal the identity of the place and the culture, which, in the world of wine, is called field blend. In other words, oils that clearly identify the varieties and the olive grove itself.
So, when making the batches, we chose to present oils with different gastronomic profiles.
The olive trees were the ones who made this oil. This needs to be emphasized. We, at the mill, just have to select batches and understand which are the best gastronomic combinations. It is our understanding that an olive oil is equivalent to a rare spice – it serves to enhance what is already good in itself.
