The Salt Pans of Rio Maior
The salt pans are part of the protected area of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, about 75km from Lisbon. The limestone characteristics of this area allow for the formation of underground watercourses. One of these courses crosses a rock salt deposit and feeds a well where water is extracted that is 7 times saltier than seawater.
